Measurements for Girl’s Headbands:

Here is a quick guide on how to cut your elastic when making headbands or hair ties. Baby headband sizing, of course, can be any measurement you want, if you measure the baby/child’s head – you can simply take that measurement and cut your elastic according to that. However here is a quick reference for “standard” measurements for girls of all ages:

Fold Over Elastic WholesaleSizes we recommend for our fold over elastic, printed elastic, 3/8th inch elastic, 1/8th inch elastic:

{ Premie} 11-12″
{ Newborn } 13″
{ 0-1 Year } 14″
{ 1-6 Years} 15″
{Child-teen} 16.5″
{ Adults } 17.5″

*when cutting your elastic, we recommend cutting approximately 0.5″ larger than the recommended sizing, so you can overlap the elastic to glue or sew it together.

Sizes we recommend for our stretch lace and glitter elastic, velvet elastic *this is slightly larger due to the elasticity being tighter than standard elastic

{ Premie } 11.5-12.5″
{ Newborn } 13.5″
{ 0-1 Year } 14.5″
{ 1-6 Years} 15.5″
{Child-teen} 17″
{ Adults } 18″

*when cutting your elastic, we recommend cutting approximately 0.5″ larger than the recommended sizing, so you can overlap the elastic to glue or sew it together.

Measurements for DIY hair ties:

{Child-teen} 8″
{ Adults } 10″

*You will get about 2 inches of “tie” when these are finished, of course this will depend on how close your knot gets to the end. We might also recommend adding an inch to these measurements when using the glitter elastic for DIY hair ties as it does have a tighter stretch than the regular elastic. Our fold over elastic grab bags are a great place to start for making your own girl’s hair ties, or headbands – they come with a huge variety of colors/prints/sizes/etc allowing you to get a wide selection of elastic for a great price!

Hopefully this will be a great reference for measurements for elastic headbands and hair ties that you can use in all your crafting projects!

  3. Do you happen to also have measurements for the different sizes in Baby Barefoot Sandals? New to making them and can’t find a chart anywhere! 🙁

  4. Hi
    Am confused about the elastics
i I would like to make a fabric headband with a piece of elastic at the back of neck for my neice, who is 5 months old, what length should the fabric be and what size should the elastic be

    • I would say about 14 inches. I like to make them even 7 inches of elastic and 7 inches of the fabric. However when cutting the elastic cut it about 7.5 inches so it’s about 7 inches after you glue it on:) Thanks!

    • I would make it about half and half, for a total of 14 inches. I would cut the elastic at 7.5 inches so after you glue it on the fabric it will be about 7 inches. Thanks so much:)
